John Wolfhooker is a four-piece band from Prague describing themselves as an alt-rock salad peppered with progressive breakdowns and pop melodies. That all served with very energetic live shows.
One of the more classic Northlane-sounding tracks on Obsidian, “Plenty” is a bleak look at forsaking reincarnation, with its perplexing time-signature bookending a delicately soaring chorus. As frontman Marcus Bridge wrestles with the idea of another go at life, the sentiment will stay with you long after the final breakdown fades away.
THE OKLAHOMA KID stands for breathtaking modern metal that bridges the gap between technical intricacy and energizing rhythms. Since their formation in 2012 the band – consisting of David J. Hollow Front vocalist Tyler Tate shares that “Comatose” is ultimately about battling against depression while living in the hopeless, nightmarish world situation of the pandemic. Specifically, the song explores him being left with a comatose-like feeling after having live music, life purpose, and meaning ripped from underneath him due to restrictions.
“The idea of this song is about a person being intentionally difficult even though happiness wants to find him/her,” Hranica says, giving the listener a deeper insight into the powerful subject matter. “In handling my own mental health struggles, I’ve found that I oftentimes never choose contentment on a fundamental basis: almost like I’ve skipped Step One.
