Rise Records can be relied upon. Nowadays, it doesn’t matter which band from this label is spinning on the turntable; most of them seem to suffer from a startling lack of identity. This seems to be a common issue with almost all American Christian core bands, where complete assimilation appears to be the norm. If we are all equal before God, why bother putting effort into composing music? MISS MAY I from Troy, Ohio, formed in 2006 and signed with the American label at the end of 2008, string together breakdown after breakdown, place staccato riffs next to each other, vary their tempo from slow to hyper, and mix growls with shouts. And everything leads into the cleanly sung chorus, into the beautiful melody. Although they do without keyboards, the clean vocal parts sound like they have some studio wizardry behind them. On their debut album “Apologies Are For The Weak,” MISS MAY I sound far too contrived, bordering on formulaic. At least they don’t make you want to hit the repeat button. “Well, we have been asked a lot if we are a Christian band due to our lyrics. And the answer to that is no, but some of us are Christians and others are not.” With this statement, they ensure that their message isn’t packaged in clichés or pointed fingers at sinners. It’s also worth noting the powerful production and the strong cover design. “Well, our goal is to just have a long, healthy career with this music.” MISS MAY I, if that’s truly what you want, then transform yourselves quickly from a bloodless, short-lived product into something with lasting substance!
